Our Thriving Community

Advisory provides each middle school student with individualized attention from a faculty advisor. The advisor supports his/her advisees in all areas of school life. Advisors monitor progress, listen, offer counsel, and advocate for advisees in disciplinary situations. Advisories meet formally as a group every Tuesday. On Mondays, we have our Town meeting. Town meetings are general assembly meetings where all members of the Middle School community are present. It is the time we celebrate successes, share important messages and showcase learning in our school. Thursdays and Fridays are tutorial periods, when students may seek help or work on homework. In the Fifth Grade, the student’s classroom teacher is his or her advisor.

The House System serves to build community spirit and generates enthusiasm and participation among students, both in and out of the classroom. All middle school students are randomly assigned to one of the four Houses: Romans, Vikings, Saxons, or Normans. Each House has four faculty advisors, and students stay with their Houses for their entire association with the Middle School.

Throughout the year, there are opportunities for both individuals and groups to contribute to their House. The three main areas of involvement are academic achievement, sports, and community service. Individual and House cumulative point totals are reported each quarter, and special awards are presented at the Awards Assembly in June.

The Student Leadership Committee (SLC) fosters and encourages the development of leadership skills. Student representatives organize events (Spirit Day, pep rallies, Thanksgiving Assembly and student mixers, for example). They are also trained how to help peers who may need a sympathetic ear, and learn to voice concerns put forth by their fellow classmates.
