In Third Grade, students think, talk, and write about what they read in articles, books, and electronic texts.
Reading
Students continue to improve fluency and focus on comprehension strategies used to interpret more challenging fiction and nonfiction text. Through purposeful text analysis, they evaluate characters and learn to determine what the text says explicitly, as well as to make logical inferences from it. Students also focus on using evidence from text to support their thinking.
Writing and Spelling
Students continue to study the writing process and focus on how to organize and develop ideas, paying particular attention to revising and editing skills. They are able to support their opinions or points of view using details and reasons and can develop strong introductions and conclusions. Students in third grade continue to apply the spelling patterns they have learned while also learning about more complex word families and irregularly spelled words.
