Each year TASIS England students dedicate over 15,000 hours to community service, extending learning beyond the classroom and helping to make a real difference to those around them and the organizations they work with.
One of the organizations the students help support is One to One. This independent charity, based in North West Surrey, organizes social activities for adults aged 18 upwards with learning disabilities in Spelthorne, Runnymede, and Elmbridge.
The charity is supported by local volunteers who give up their time freely and willingly to help, including TASIS students supported by Ms. Aguais and more recently, Mr. Hobbs. The group members are always very welcoming and very pleased to have young people from TASIS take part in their weekly meetings, where they enjoy events such as Bingo, Board Games nights, and theatre visits.
At the end of January, TASIS students were in charge of organizing an evening’s entertainment. They were supported by Mr. Neads, TASIS Sports Coach, who came up with the idea to set up a Crazy Golf course in the church hall for the group members to enjoy. The TASIS students set up 6 holes of the Crazy Golf course using tables, chairs, screens, and ramps, as well as bongo drums and an abacus as obstacles. They also provided hockey sticks to use as golf clubs. They invited the One to One members to play and all stepped up to try their hands at the course. Although there were no "holes in one," the atmosphere was full of fun and laughter as they putted around the course with the encouragement and friendly support of TASIS students.
When everyone had finished a round (or two), a huge golf-themed cake, provided by TASIS and proclaiming "We Are The Champions," was served and enjoyed by all.
The evening was a great success and everyone went home with a smile on their face. Many thanks to Mr. Neads, Ms. Aguais, and Mr. Hobbs, as well as Samuel Blasko and Peter Blasko, who led the TASIS students on the evening:
