Kindergarten at TASIS England
TASIS Lower School is committed to educating the whole child, and the program focuses not only on the academic, but also on the creative, moral, and physical development of children.
The curriculum is both traditional and innovative, and is supplemented by a variety of social and cultural activities. TASIS endorses, through all its programs, an enthusiasm for life, for learning and for individual growth within a purposeful community.
In Kindergarten, language arts instruction focuses on early phonemic awareness and reading skills. Students also build their foundation skills for writing, speaking, and listening.
Students learn about the alphabet: the basic features of letters and words and the role they play in reading. They begin to develop an understanding of the relationship of letters to words and words to sentences. By developing phonological awareness, students begin decoding words. At the same time, they are introduced to the beginning skills necessary to comprehend and analyze what they are reading. Speaking and listening skills are practiced through class discussions.
Writing and Spelling
Students acquire writing skills through a combination of drawing, dictation, and writing to share information, ideas, and feelings. Spelling focuses on sound-symbol correspondence as well as phonetically appropriate spelling approximations.

The Research Process
Through teacher modeling students will:
- Understand topic-based guiding questions
- Practice note taking methods
Students learn about whole numbers and what they represent and the relationship between numbers and quantities. They build a foundation of number sense, developing cardinality, counting strategies, and strategies for composing and decomposing numbers. Students also learn to describe, classify, and compare 2-D and 3-D shapes. They apply their understanding of shapes to compose larger shapes from simple shapes.
