Students Recreate Historical Image
Posted 09/10/2015 02:02PM

Sixth grade Ancient Civilization class students have been learning about Sumerian art as part of their study of Ancient Mesopotamia.

The group brought their studies to life by recreating an historical image of twelve votive figures from the Square Temple at Eshnunna (modern Tell Asmar) in Iraq, which date from around 2,700 BCE. Taught by Ms. Burton, this particular unit engages cross-curricular study using both knowledge of history and art skills. In collaboration with the middle school art department, students will use clay to create cuneiform (the first form of writing). Their pieces will then be fired in the kiln to produce a lasting ceramic, featuring their own names written in cuneiform.

As a finale to the unit, students will view a series of slides of Ancient Mesopotamian art provided by the British Museum–learning about the Art Loss Register, the world's largest private database of lost and stolen art, antiques, and collectibles.
