Keeping Children Safe in Education

This Accessibility Plan is drawn up in compliance with current legislation and requirements as specified in the Equality Act 2010, Schedule 10, relating to Disability. The proprietary Board of Directors are accountable for ensuring the implementation, review, and reporting of progress of the Accessibility Plan over a prescribed period.

The Equality Act 2010 replaced all existing equality legislation, including the Disability Discrimination Act. The effect of this law is the same as in the past, meaning that “schools cannot unlawfully discriminate against pupils because of sex, race, disability, religion or belief, and sexual orientation."

TASIS is an international school offering an American curriculum, including a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and both the American High School and International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme diplomas. Our students represent more than 60 nationalities and are enrolled in classes from Early Years through Grade 12. We have a flexible, rolling admissions policy and welcome applications all year round for students aged 3 to 18 (Early Years through to Grade 12/Year 13). The aim of this policy is to ensure that students learn in a supportive, caring, and safe environment without fear of being bullied. Bullying is anti-social behavior and affects everyone; it is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Only when all issues of bullying are addressed will students be able to fully benefit from the opportunities available at the School. Bullying is defined as deliberately hurtful behavior, repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves. Bullying includes: (mainly repetitive) name-calling; taunting; mocking; making offensive comments; kicking; hitting; pushing; taking belongings; inappropriate text messaging and emailing; sending offensive or degrading images by phone or via the internet; producing offensive graffiti; gossiping; excluding people from groups; and spreading hurtful and untruthful rumors.

Raising standards in education and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential is an assumption widely understood but is often insufficiently stated – students are required to attend school regularly to benefit from their education. Missing out on lessons leaves children vulnerable to falling behind. Children with poor attendance tend to achieve less in both primary and secondary school. 

It is the responsibility of the Head of School to ensure that attendance and punctuality are monitored regularly.

The primary aims of our School are to ensure that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, with values built on mutual trust and respect for all. The School's behavior policy is therefore intended to support all members of our school community in living and working together in a mutually beneficial way. It aims to promote an environment in which everyone feels happy, safe, and secure. The School has a number of rules, but our behavior policy is not primarily concerned with rule enforcement. It is a means of promoting good relationships, so that people can work together with the common purpose of helping everyone to learn. The School expects every member of the school community to behave in a considerate way towards others. This policy aims to help children grow in a safe and secure environment, and to become positive, responsible, and increasingly independent members of the School and the wider community.

TASIS England acknowledges the benefits and positive experience for our boarding students to be able to stay with close family, family friends, and friends for an evening, an occasional overnight stay, or sometimes for a weekend. TASIS England acts in loco parentis of boarding students and therefore must ensure that a protocol exists for the safeguarding, health, and well-being of our boarders while they are under the supervision and care of other adults outside of the school. Boarding students are permitted to attend evening and overnight visits at weekends and this protocol outlines the expectations of boarders, their parents, and the host family whenever the student may be staying overnight.

Boarders should always feel that they can take a problem or complaint to any adult charged with their care and receive a sympathetic hearing. Most difficulties can be sorted out in this informal manner. The following avenues of complaint are available:

• Speaking to the Head of Boarding, the Upper School Dean of Students, the Health Center Manager, or the Designated Safeguarding Lead privately.
• Speaking to a school counselor or any other responsible adult privately.
• Speaking to the Head of School or the Head of Upper School privately.

This policy, which is part of the School’s admission pack, is made available to parents prior to their child being admitted to the School. A copy (which can be made available in large print or other accessible format if required) may be obtained from the School Office upon request. The students who are boarders are specifically made aware of this policy, and of how they or their parents may contact ISI regarding any complaints they may have about boarding welfare. Parents of children in the Early Years Foundation Stage may also make a complaint to ISI or OFSTED if they believe the School is not providing an appropriate provision for the children.

We encourage teachers to undertake educationally valuable visits to sites within the United Kingdom and overseas, providing these do not unduly hinder the usual operation of the School and that the health, safety, and welfare of students is paramount at all times. Faculty and staff at TASIS England make the education and safety of the students their primary concern. They are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in their work and conduct. This policy is applicable to all premises under the control of TASIS The American School in England and describes the approach to the control of risk from fire to ensure that risks from fire are identified, and that arrangements are in place to control those risks. TASIS England is committed to the safeguarding of all students and recognizes the immense duty of care for our international boarders. Parents and families of boarders are often overseas and not able to attend school quickly in an emergency. TASIS England do not consider it best practice to outsource the care of our boarders to UK Guardians or host families. TASIS England therefore does not ask parents of our international boarders to appoint UK Guardians prior to arrival.

TASIS is committed to improving Health and Safety management in all activities. To assist in the implementation of a suitable Health and Safety management system, TASIS engages the competent Health and Safety resource required under current regulations. Guidance entitled "Successful Health and Safety Management" and "Leading Health and Safety at Work" published by the Health and Safety Executive and the Institute of Directors will be used to develop our approach to managing risk.

At TASIS England, the Lead Nurses and the Director of Inclusion, Wellbeing, and Compliance are the Appointed Persons for overseeing the Health Center and matters related to first aid for the School's employees, students, and all individuals present on the premises. This includes both teaching and non-teaching staff, volunteers, students, and visitors (including contractors). The Appointed Persons hold the responsibility for managing first aid provisions, which includes maintaining equipment and facilities and ensuring the presence of relevant risk assessments. They are also accountable for arranging appropriate appointments, training, and resources to support the first aid provisions.

As described within the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools s2.3. the Independent Listener is a person outside the staff and those responsible for the leadership and governance of the School, who boarders may contact directly about personal problems or concerns at school.

Operation Encompass is a national police-led initiative designed to ensure that vital safeguarding information regarding domestic abuse and/or missing children is received by schools as soon as possible. By promptly notifying a child's school if Surrey Police are called out to a domestic incident in the home, or a child is reported as missing, the school can provide help and support as needed.

Our School’s Prevent strategy aims to stop people entering into activities that may lead to them to become terrorists or to support terrorism. While it remains rare for children and young people to become involved in terrorist activity, young people from an early age can be exposed to terrorist, extremist influences or prejudiced views. As with other forms of safeguarding strategies, early intervention is always preferable. Schools, working with other local partners, families, and communities, play a key role in ensuring young people and their communities are safe from the threat of terrorism.

TASIS England sees Prevent as a part of the safeguarding framework, communicates and promotes the importance of this to staff, and ensures that they implement the Prevent duty effectively.

It is recognized that RSE is a cross-curricular area, which impinges on all aspects of students’ personal and social education and development. At TASIS The American School in England we have a responsibility to provide education on relationships, health and well-being, and sex education. This education is available to all registered students. A whole-school approach to RSE is adopted. The Board of Directors, Senior Leadership Team, and all staff and volunteers at TASIS England are committed to the prevention, early identification, and appropriate management of sexual violence and sexual harassment, including child-on-child abuse (as defined below) both within and beyond the School. In particular, we: 

• believe that in order to protect children, we need to be aware of the level and nature of risk to which students are or may be exposed, and put in place a clear and comprehensive strategy which is tailored to our specific safeguarding context; 
• take a contextual whole-school approach to preventing and responding to all forms of child-on-child abuse; 
• regard the introduction of this policy as a preventative measure, and do not feel it is acceptable merely to take a reactive approach to abuse in response to alleged incidents of it; 
• recognize national and increasing concern about this issue, and wish to implement this policy in order to ensure that our students are safe; and
• encourage parents to hold us to account on this issue, so that if their child is feeling unsafe as a result of the behavior of any of their peers, they should inform the School, so that it can ensure that appropriate and prompt action is taken in response.

The statutory guidance sets out key principles to enable education establishments to implement their legal duty under the Education Act 1996 to make arrangements to identify, as far as it is possible to do so, children (students) missing education. Schools should be able to demonstrate that they have considered this guidance and implement required policies and protocols to cover issues of students missing education.

Supervision is implemented in order to maintain an orderly, respectful, and positive school environment, as well as to promote the health and safety of students at the School. TASIS England provides safe, structured, supportive, and effective supervision for students during the school day, during school-sponsored travel, co-curricular sports, excursions, educational trips and visits, activities, clubs, and social events.

The level of supervision varies depending on the age of the student. Boarding house duty teams, boarding support workers, and rovers extend this supervision for boarding students throughout their time on campus including evening and throughout the night.

Raising concerns at work, often known as whistleblowing, is the act of reporting a concern about a risk, wrongdoing, or illegality at work, in the public interest. We aim to promote effective and safe whistleblowing so that staff feel informed and confident to raise their concerns at an early stage.
