Writing Fellows Reveal Riches to Students

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but to reveal to him his own.” – Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli

TASIS England’s Writing Fellows serve to exemplify Disraeli’s words, for it is words that form the foundation of their mission. They provide individual support to Upper School students on specific assignments, and they are available to teach mini-lessons in the classroom.

“The Writing Fellows are selected for their strengths as creative or critical writers and for their desire to share their skills with others,” Head of Upper School Stephanie Feo Hughes wrote. Mrs. Feo Hughes founded the program in 2016.

The Grade 12 students chosen for the current academic year include Sophie B, Thomas H, Daniel H, Ryan L. Sophie L, Danielle M, Ella M, Lily N, Kyla R, Stella V, and Sasha W. “I'm honored to be a part of this esteemed organization, and I'm looking forward to providing assistance to those who need it,” Ryan L said.

The Writing Fellows model rejects the teaching of writing as remediation but rather embraces authentic purposeful instruction. The Writing Fellows team met such a challenge when they were recently booked to teach the Question 3 argument essay to the AP Language and Composition classes. "My aim as a Writing Fellow this year is to help students achieve the most improvement in their writing assignments by understanding what a rubric is looking for,” Daniel H explained.

Students often struggle with the development of their ideas and their analysis. They can identify a rhetorical or a figurative device but struggle to write about the effect of those authorial choices. Ella M talked about her goals to address these challenges. “As a Writing Fellow, I hope to be able to utilize the rhetoric skills I learned in AP Language and Composition to help other students better their writing and be able to analyze information efficiently.”

The riches of writing at TASIS are further revealed through this team of eleven talented Writing Fellows eager to help others find the joy they have found in writing. As Sophie L said, “As a Writing Fellow, I hope to foster a similar love for writing that I developed in AP Language and Composition. I am excited to help and see the program blossom!”
