Patrick (Grade 12) has dedicated his time to Barnardo’s charity shop, a chain of over 600 stores across the UK. In his interview with Mairéad (Grade 12), an Upper School Service Ambassador, he shared an overview of the charity’s goals and principles, his personal efforts, and the impact his service has had on him.
Patrick, can you talk a little bit about what this organisation does – what is its goal?
From my experience, Barnardos’ main goal is to ensure that every child can grow up in a safe, supportive, and loving environment. Volunteers work towards this hope by providing aid in the form of fundraising and by offering services. They also spread awareness about the situation of local families in need. These services are funded through means such as charity shops and fundraising events.
What made you want to become so involved in it? What motivates you to engage in service leadership?
I want to contribute to my community and be able to promote opportunities for underprivileged individuals. Especially coming from my background of a multitude of opportunities and advantages, I want to engage in service as a way to give back. Being born and raised in South Africa, I have witnessed families who were not as fortunate as I am. Since then, one of my life goals has been to dedicate my time to helping those in need.
Have you been able to meet other like-minded volunteers along the way?
Yes, I have. The individuals involved in Barnardos are extremely passionate, committed to helping others and eager to learn new things, even from me. The group of volunteers at the location where I currently volunteer are a very diverse collection of people from a variety of backgrounds. I’ve experienced a broadening of perspectives throughout my time there.
Have you seen any tangible impacts of your work?
Over the years, we have seen an increase in interest and participation from the public in fundraisers and events at Barnardos. Additionally, by delivering packages and supplies to families, I've had the privilege of seeing firsthand how much they mean. That has been very significant for me.
How would you describe the significance of your experience at Barnardos to you as a person?
I have witnessed the conditions in which vulnerable children and families live, which has changed my perspective of my own position in the world and definitely deepened my understanding of social issues and inequalities. I’d like to think I’m a much more open-minded, aware person as a result of it.
How have you tried to expand the service opportunity around school/in your personal life?
I have spread the word about Barnardos and their goals to various people I have met. As Barnardos has been a significant place of leadership and character development for me, I often talk about it and encourage others to partake. I have also brought personal donations for the charity shop and tried to motivate my friends and peers to do the same.
What is your favourite/most meaningful memory from your service/involvement in this organisation?
I would have to say that my most impactful memory from my time with Barnardo’s was my participation in a holiday gift drive, collecting toys, books, and essentials for children in need. As part of the initiative, I delivered packages to a family with young children. I gave the little girl a small stuffed animal, and seeing how much happiness it brought her really touched me. Her mother expressed deep gratitude, sharing how challenging the year had been.
Are there any other aspects of your experience that you would like to share?
I just want to emphasise the attitudes of everyone involved in Barnardos. It is an organisation filled with like-minded individuals who all share the common passion of empowering the vulnerable, which is very powerful and something I'm really grateful to be involved in. Although there are many different people who bring donations to the store, the one thing they all seem to have in common is an incredibly strong positivity. Seeing this level of care and solidarity from the local community always puts a smile on my face.
Would you recommend it to students who might be interested in becoming more involved? If so, why?
Working at an organisation like Barnardos has opened my eyes to how fortunate I am. It gave me a sense of responsibility and a desire to help those who are vulnerable, especially children. Barnardos is more than just a charity, it is a family of people from all walks of life who share the same goals. Through these experiences, I have learned how to communicate and work together in a team. I wholeheartedly recommend others to participate in Barnardos or similar projects, both for the positive impact on local families in need, as well as on those who work to improve their way of life.
