Soccer star, David Beckham, with a TASIS student at the Let's Move Event.
Fifty-seven lucky TASIS students celebrated the start of the Olympics by taking part in “Let’s Move!,” an event designed to encourage children to be more active and exercise. First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the occasion at Winfield House, the US Ambassador’s residence in Regent’s Park on July 27th.
Lower and middle school students enjoyed a whirl of activities, playing a variety of sports and games while meeting professional and Olympic athletes. Soccer stars David Beckham and Brandi Chastain, and Olympic gold medalists Summer Sanders, Dominique Dawes, Carl Lewis, Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, and Apolo Ohno were just a few of the athletes who joined in the fun.
Mrs. Obama led by example, taking part in a number of activities including a tennis game, shuttle relay, tug-of-war, and a soccer game with Spongebob Squarepants guarding the goal. The day was rounded out with a surprise performance by British-Irish boy-band The Wanted. The fun and excitement was succinctly summed up by 13-year-old Amanda Wilson, "It was the best day of my life!"
NBA basketball player, Grant Hill, talked to students and joined in with the activities.
